Yamaha's DGX-505 was their top of the line in the Portable Grand series when it was first announced at NAMM in 2004. It was a complete overhaul of the DGX series, meant for first-time piano buyers. Today, much of the technology has admittedly fallen out of favor, but it is still a fine digital piano for the original audience: new pianists.

The DGX505 features an easy-to-use 6-track sequencer for recording, built-in speaker system, pitch bend wheel, a large selection of onboard songs and Yamaha's XGlite/GM voices. The built-in, Yamaha Education Suite (YES III) includes exercises, interactive lessons and a "Your Tempo" learning mode, which allows the user to learn songs by progressing at a suitable rate and repeat any difficult sections.

Also included is the intuitive Easy Song Arranger, the fun Performance Assistant feature, SmartMedia® storage and USB connectivity. With the large LCD Lyric and Score display, you can simply press the Score button and see the notation, even for the songs you've recorded yourself. The pages scroll automatically when a song is played back as well -- no pesky page turning!

Do note that while this piano has a full 88-keys, they are not weighted keys. It also has slightly over-sensitive velocity sensors, which is a common problem in older Yamaha digital pianos. What this means is that it'll be difficult for budding pianists to develop a proper playing technique that'll translate over to other pianos. Also worth mentioning is that this instrument has been repaired by our digital technician, and is in the best condition it can be.

Still, at a very modest price, the DGX-505 would make an excellent introduction to piano-playing. The controls are simple and learning features plenty. Having the matching stand with wooden side panels makes it suitable for home settings in addition to practice on the go. We would recommend those local to the Chicagoland area take advantage of the deal so that we can support any warranty/repair needs ourselves!
